    Background

NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) is planned to fly in the mid-2020s. It will be crucial demonstrator of NASA’s new era of hardware which will take astronauts out of Earth’s orbit for the first time since the Apollo Program. ARM will show that it is possible for human ingenuity to ‘rearrange the solar system’ - that is, catch up to a target asteroid and nudge it into an orbit desirable for scientific research, resource extraction or a stepping stone for further exploration. As such, NASA views asteroids as a critical resource for humanity’s expansion beyond low earth orbit (LEO).

The potential of space-based mining is appealing for far-sighted speculators, who foresee a near future where so called ‘Rare-Earth metals’ crucial for our technological society have become depleted. Once claimed, asteroids might have billion dollar valuations.

NASA’s primary interest in asteroids, in terms of extraction, will be water -- the most valuable resource in any space-based economy - providing irrigation for food, oxygen, radiation protection and propellant.

    Challenge

Find creative ways to show the value of asteroids as a destination for exploration that are just as valuable as the Moon and Mars in terms of developing space infrastructure, as they have no gravity well. Your task is to imagine a future history catalyzed by the ARM mission. We’d like for you to develop a digital experience that dramatizes the development of human progress in the solar system using asteroids as a stepping stone to the Moon, Mars and ultimately, the stars.

    Considerations

The format you choose to bring this to life is up to your creativity to determine. Consider creating an online learning experience, aimed at ages 12 and above, with flexibility for multiple uses -- schools, planetariums, museums, or libraries -- to enhance science syllabus. Your execution could be a group experience, or run standalone on a computer, tablet, smartphone or internet-enabled TV.

Sample Resources (Participants do not have to use these resources, and NASA in no way endorses any particular entity listed).
