    Background

NASA missions generate expected and unexpected audio files. We have a number of collections housed in different places – including sounds from historic and current missions. You will hear eerie sci-fi sounding beeps and whirs from outer space, the roar of rocket engines, and human commentary during missions – even memorable works such as, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” We would love to see you integrate NASA into your daily lives with sound applications of your own.

    Challenge

Develop an interactive tool to leverage NASA audio files from space missions in new and innovative ways, from arts and entertainment to science and engineering. Your solution could be a new audio capability or platform to feature, consume, enhance, or alter NASA files. Or perhaps you can decode hidden messages in files that NASA missed. The future is in your hands. Show us what you can do.

    Considerations

    • Develop an interactive tool to leverage NASA audio files from space missions
    • Your solution could be a new audio capability or platform to feature, consume, enhance, or alter NASA files. Or perhaps you can decode hidden messages in files that NASA missed. For example, you could take NASA sound files and find interesting ways to include those as computer “alert” sounds (e.g. new email, boot up/shut down sounds). Or, you could find ways to extract important information from existing audio files (effectively filtering out background noise) to help the world discover new information. Or, perhaps you could incorporate some of the space sounds into your cars computer, so when you step on the accelerator, you experience “lift off” – at a non-hazardous level, of course.
