The idea behind Brainterstellar is to create an open platform where people around the world could collaborate to obtain a human-like scan of the planet in a very short period of time. Thus obtaining meaningful answers to non-trivial questions from the satellite images.
Every day Nasa satellites are taking thousands of pictures of the earth and outer space. It is almost impossible for a single person to check all this new data in a short period of time. Although computers can be programmed to recognize certain visual patterns in exquisitely precision, the human brain is still much better at recognizing and interpreting certain qualities of the images, like beauty. With our platform we aim to solve many of these problems by establishing a collaborative community. We created a simple but efficient algorithm that orchestrates the process of scanning of the earth by humans all around the world. We have already a user interface that allows people around the world to scan the Earth in a short period of time.
In order to promote participation around the world we are using a gamification approach. Gamification is the use of game thinking and game mechanics in non-game contexts to engage users in solving problems and increase users' self contributions. We will create challenges and give rewards to the users, like for example postcards from the most stunning images of the day.
The potential of our platform is not limited to entertainment. With the creation of Brainterstellar we also foresee a huge impact on research communities and for environmentalists trying to protect the world and make life on Earth more sustainable.
