mad-mapping-asteroid-density

There is a very large knowledge gap for the density of asteroids and other small bodies. The density is a vital physical property that is necessary for impact mechanics, planetary science, and cosmology. This mission will reduce this gap and provide scientists and researchers with accurate densities of multiple small bodies with a single mission

This project is solving the Create Your Own Asteroid Mission challenge.

Description

The MAD mission is a single cubesat, much like the 2014 "Kitsat" which will deploy chipsats with radio beacons. Thesae chipsats will use active solar sail control to enter the orbit of multiple small bodies. The radio beacons can then be analyzed for Doppler shift to determine the density of the body with accuracy of a few percent. This mission is extremely low cost, and will be able to reduce the knowledge gap with precise data on many small bodies.
