columbus

Our aim is to design a rover that will explore uncharted territories and create a rudimentary map of the surroundings that it will explore based on data received from various sensors and GPS coordinates. The map then can be used by engineers to use as an assessment tool for feasibility studies for future rover missions.

This project is solving the Sensor Yourself challenge.

Description

Our aim is to design a rover that will explore uncharted territories and create a rudimentary map of the surroundings that it will explore based on data received from various sensors and GPS coordinates.

Although the complexity of this project can be increased by using various sensors, we are going to keep it relatively simple. We are only going to use an ultrasonic distance measuring sensor, gyroscope and GPS device.

The idea is pretty simple. The robot will keep moving in a predefined path until it encounters an impediment. An impediment can be an object like a rock , or it can be a pothole. These can be detected using the distance measuring sensor and gyroscope respectively. The robot then will try to find a way around that obstruction. All the data will be recorded. Using the coordinates given by the GPS device and sensor data , a map can be created which will be helpful in calculating how to reach point A to point B safely in this newly charted terrain.
