4forest

4Forest is Android/Web app for the purpose of monitoring and conserving forest. The android app is used for data collection through crowd-sourcing, reporting and sendig SMS alerts to the concerned authorities. Web application is used for data visualization, analysis and decision making.

This project is solving the Forest Monitor Mapping challenge.

Description

4Forest android/web app is developed with an aim of monitoring and conserving forest, This project combines an android app with a web app to achieve the aim. Android app is used to crowdsource the data about the factors that lead to forest degradation and deterioration; web app is for visualisation and analysis. Web app also supports geo-fencing feature through which the app users get notifications when they enter into protected areas. Android app facilitates the crowd to report the event of forest fire or deforestation that they encounter, upload the photograph of the scenario and then provide the actual or possible reason behind that. This report is verified in 4Forest web app by overlaying the location of uploaded geotagged photograph over the Forest cover map of Nepal available from ICIMOD. After verification, SMS alerts will be sent to the concerned authorities of that particular area through android app. All the reported points will be visualised on web app. When the points are clicked, the information reported by users will be displayed along with uploaded images. The control unit can use this information to analyse and find the most vulnerable area on one hand and on the other hand, they can determine the solutions to major causes of forest degradation. Moreover, they can geofence the vulnerable areas so that any person entering that area gets notification about the situation.
