radiation-induced-soft-errors-in-low-cost-microcontroller-implementations-for-space-research

A simple experiment to observe radiation-induce soft errors in open-source electronic prototyping platforms.

This project is solving the Deep Space CamSat challenge.

Description

A simple project that caught interest after hearing comments during the 2014 39th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz).

CubeSats were described using PIC based microcontrollers and one speaker said the use of such devices in low earth orbits really had no need for radiation hardening.

Initially only thought experiment but later a setup was constructed to run an experiment with some C++ code attempting communication over two serial ports

With the following equipment, looking at continuing the experiment.

Arduino Micro Bit Error Rate Analyzer CD V-700 Model 6b Geiger Counter Uranium Ore

Current design goal is to:

Code the Arduino Micro to accept serial asynchronous data from the BER, fill the memory of the Micro, and send the data back to the BER.

Then expose the Micro to different levels of radiation based on the CD V-700 6b readings and note the results.

This is only a short description of the possible avenues that this project can take.
