donut---drone-on-board-unmanned-technology

DONUT - Drone ON-board Unmanned Technology - is an unmanned, autonomous and pre-programmed drone able to fly in microgravity condition, on-board and outside a spacecrafts orbiting around Earth or travelling in outer space.

This project is solving the ZERO GEE Bee – Your Friendly Neighborhood Drone challenge.

Description

The goals achieved during the italian Space Apps Challenge weekend are:

1) the ability of flying in autonomous and pre-programmed modalities in space environmen;

2) the improvement in surveillance inside the spacecraft using different operational modes;

3) three-dimensional mobility to a variety of interchangeable mission packages - 2 Kg payload at least using a versatile velcro pocket located in the middle of the ring-shaped drone.

Our particular design concept provides improved hover and precision maneuver characteristics. The on-board flight control system takes care of maintaining platform stability and coordinating the controls. We also put a lot of though on preventing failures by actively looking for effective implementation of study, reliable back-up systems (such as infra-red sensors and alerts on-board). Moreover, we have designed a rubber bumber on sharp-cornered sides of the drone in order to improve its operational safety.
